Somos apenas pessoas.

Feeling like a woman

Caitlyn Jenner’s beautiful Annie Leibowitz photoshoot on the cover of Vanity Fair was splashed across the press and the net last week, and guaranteed many views and sales of the magazine (in Portugal, a similar effect in views and sales was witnessed with the eye-scorching horror that was that Quaresma cover, with Cristina awkwardly trying to look sexy in that nasty dress, while nestling into Quaresma’s shaven crotch… but let’s not go there…or let’s… wasn’t it awful?).

Caitlyn Jenner opted for the common ideal of “what it feels/looks like to be a woman”, i.e. Jessica Rabbit, and, luckily for her, Bruce had the bone structure and the money to be able achieve that look. To be fair, I don’t know if Caitlyn wants to be that woman 24 hours a day. She may well also want to be the woman who slouches around in old grey pyjamas and no bra, but we have only seen the glamorous woman that she wants to be, and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to be glamorous occasionally? Hell, who wouldn’t love an Annie Leibowitz photoshoot?

There are many Jessica Rabbits around; women, transgender women and gay and heterosexual transvestite men. If all of them hold Jessica as an ideal for womanhood, let them. They are just part of a huge spectrum that makes up the idea of “being a woman”.

If someone has the feeling that they have the wrong physical body to go with their psychological identity, whether that identity is Jessica Rabbit or a nice vicar’s wife in a flowery dress, then there is no reason for anyone else to get their knickers in a twist about their getting something done about it. It’s their body and their life, and in most cases, their struggle that they are resolving. If gender reassignment makes happier people, what’s the problem? The continuing vitriol aimed at people with “different” gender identities is mystifying to me and stupid.

It can grate on this woman’s nerves a little, however, when it is all loudly and certainly proclaimed as the feeling of “I am a woman/man”.

Caitlyn Jenner tells us that she knows that she is a woman, because she feels like a woman and has done all her life. How does she know?

I’m a woman. I have given birth to two kids and I get plenty of sexist crap thrown at me. I look and act like a woman, because of my two X chromosomes, my wiring, my hormones and many sociological reasons that have helped to craft the woman-like thing that I am.

However, I have no idea what it is to “feel like a woman”.

I can say that I feel warm as I remember feeling cold. I can say that I feel like a mother, because I remember not being one. In terms of the gender that I feel myself to be, I have no reference. I have only ever been what I am. I just feel like me.

Therefore, I am intrigued when someone says that they want to undergo gender reassignment because they feel like they are one gender in the body of another. I don’t deny that that is what they are feeling, but I can’t imagine what “feeling like a woman/man” in any kind of body must feel like.

It seems to me that transgender people do not want to become women (or men), but rather assume an ideal identity of the opposite sex. All good, but please don’t tell me you “feel like a woman”. You have no idea. Just as you can’t possibly know what being a bald eagle feels like.

Maybe it shouldn’t be reasonable to say “I am a woman/man, because I feel like a woman/man”, but instead “my identity is that of my idea of what being a woman/man is, because how can I possibly know what being a woman/man feels like, even women/men don’t actually know what it feels like”

I’m not offended by people thinking they are women/men/snails, nor am I offended that people think that womanhood is being Jessica Rabbit. I’m just pedantic, and I want them to admit that they can’t know what it is to be a man or a woman or a snail.

The ghastly Kardashians have done one useful thing with their parasitic, futile, vain existence. They made Bruce Jenner far more famous than he ever would have been being a mere Olympic athlete. Caitlyn Jenner’s story, her gender reassignment, her struggle, is being accepted by the “Kardashian Generation”, those people who watch and absorb the drivel that is the Kardashians. By making transgenderism acceptable to the millions of slightly thick Kardashian fans of the world, in the space of just a couple of months, it won’t be long before transgenderism is not the scary aberration that so many people still think that it is. It’s the 21st century, for god’s sake, and we really, really shouldn’t be caring that much about people’s physical/psychological gender or sexuality any more. We’re just people.
