A BBC pediu a 177 críticos de cinema de todo o mundo para escolherem os melhores filmes do século XXI. 100 filmes foram selecionados para a lista da BBC Culture. Embora a predominância esteja na indústria norte-americana e no cinema francês e britânico, há títulos de todo o mundo, como o filme Tabu, de Miguel Gomes, no 71.º lugar.

A BBC afirma no seu site que as queixas sobre a falta da qualidade cinematográfica significavam apenas uma coisa: “Não estamos a procurar com atenção suficiente”. Se os sucessos de bilheteira continuam a ser os super-heróis, há histórias que ainda captam as boas críticas dos especialistas e, segundo a BBC, devem ser vistos pelo público.

No topo está o filme “Mulholland Drive” de David Lynch, de 2001, foi considerado o melhor filme do século XXI. Conta a história de uma mulher que após um acidente de carro fica amnésica, não se lembra quem é ou o que lhe aconteceu. Desorientada, tenta encontrar um abrigo e o local escolhido é um apartamento aparentemente desocupado. Porém, na habitação mora uma aspirante a atriz. As duas tornam-se cúmplices e tentam descobrir o passado e a vida da protagonista (e naturalmente que nenhuma descrição será algum dia suficiente para apresentar uma obra de David Lynch). O filme ganhou prémio de melhor realizador no Festival de Cannes desse ano.

Ao longo da lista, constam nomes como Spotlight (2015) de Tom McCarthy, Amour (2012) de Michael Haneke e The Social Network (2010) de David Fincher. O filme português Tabu (2012) de Miguel Gomes está em 71º lugar — onde a obra literária Tabu e o filme Sunrise, ambos da autoria de F. W. Murnau, são homenageados.
